From May 11 to 15, Madrid holds festivities in honour of its patron saint called San Isidro, with lots of music, shows and different activities for everyone! The San Isidro festivities will begin on May 11 at 6pm when the Giants and Big Heads Troupe of the City of Madrid will start the festival with its traditional parade. This beautiful procession will start at Calle de la Sal, going through Puerta del Sol and Plaza del Callao before finishing in Plaza de la Villa, where the opening speech will be given at 8pm. The first event will take place in Plaza Mayor, where the Municipal Symphonic Band of Madrid will give a concert at 10pm. It will be the first of many concerts given till the end of San Isidro, which will also host a Festival of Madrid Dances on May 12, starting at 12am.
There will also be music at night in Las Vistillas Gardens, where you can listen to flamenco, jazz, electronic music and some traditional rhythms, performed by local singers on May 15 at 8pm. You will also find children’s workshops, storytelling, games and etc. The gardens are unquestionably one of the San Isidro festivities’ main hubs, but there’s another that you won’t want to miss: San Isidro Park, full of various activities! There will be concerts, pasadoble dances, shows for families, a gathering of Seat 600s (on May 14, from 12am to 7pm) and traditional cocido (Madrid-style stew) for everyone! The Madrid’s most popular dish will be served on May 15 starting at 1pm, but first there is a cool tradition: drinking water from the fountain dedicated to Isidore the Labourer and honouring Madrid's patron saint San Isidro in the traditional romería, or pilgrimage. The famous desert for San Isidro different kind of rosquillas or traditional doughnuts: listas (“smart”, or glazed), tontas (“dumb”, or plain) or Santa Clara-style, covered in dry meringue! At San Isidro you will see many people dressed in chulapo-style (traditional Madrid dress): Manila shawls for the ladies, and waistcoats and parpusas (a style of flat cap) for the men.
The festivities of San Isidro in Madrid have prepared even more! On May 14 and 15 there will be fireworks displays set to music in Enrique Tierno Galván Park, and every day at 8.30pm next to the Temple of Debod there will be classical music to liven up the sunset. El Retiro Park, Plaza de Oriente, Plaza de Colón, Paseo del Prado and Madrid Río Park are some of the other places that will host a multitude of activities. You can enjoy la chocolatada (chocolate party) on May 12, from 11am to 1pm at Plaza de Isabel II, and the Ceramics Fair (Feria de la Cacharrería) at Plaza de las Comendadoras from May 11 to 15 during the whole day.
